The aggregates are categorized according to IS code 383; fine aggregate is defined as having a size less than 4.75 mm, and coarse aggregate is defined as having a size greater than 4.75 mm. The fineness modulus method, which classifies aggregate size by passing aggregates through a sieve in accordance with the IS standard, determines the aggregate gradation.

Concrete mixes are made more compact with the help of aggregate materials. They are essential components in the building and upkeep of rigid structures because they reduce the consumption of cement and water and increase the mechanical strength of the concrete.

Any particle larger than 0.19 inches is considered a coarse aggregate, which typically has a diameter between 3/8 and 1.5 inches. Most of the coarse aggregate used in concrete is made up of gravel, and most of the remaining material is crushed stone.
